Bumthang

Bumthang is located in central part of Bhutan. The Dzongkhag has an area of 2721.21 sq kms with elevation ranging from 1800-7000 masl and falls under Alpine region. The Dzongkhag has four gewogs: Ura, tang, Chummey and Chhoekhor. This dzongkhag experiences mild summer and very cold winter.

Bumthang directly translate to “beautiful field”. It is also known as “Spiritual heartland of Bhutan”. True to its name, the valley’s lush landscape, scenic view and some of the holiest, and sacred monasteries make Bumthang the hot spot tourist destination.

One can travel to Bumthang from road or by flight. In the dzongkhag, all gewogs are connected by GC black topped road and farm road. According to one’s preference there are local home stays and luxurious hotels to accommodate.

People from Bumthang are known as Bumthap and the language they speak is called bumthap kha. The famous local cuisine are Khuley- pancake made from buckwheat, Bhutanese buckwheat noodle known as puta, and jangbali- local pasta.

The main crop grown in Bumthang are wheat, maize, millet and buckwheat. These days even variety of paddy and potatoes are grown in the region as cash crop. They also depend on livestock, cordycep, medicinal herb, local honey and matsutake mushroom for livelihood income.

Bumthang is famous for it’s thick hand woven textile with intricate design called yathra. Yathra is made from sheep wool or yak hair.

If one wishes to see the age old tradition and artifact of Bhutan, OgyenCholing museum in Tang is the place to revive the past. The museum consist of rich artifacts which existed before social reforms took place in Bhutan.
